Colombian President Alvaro Uribe called on Colombians to give his policy of ‘Democratic Security’ time as it is trying to put an end to a long period of violence.
“It can be that we are being delayed more than many though, but the thing is that this policy needs a longer while because the violence we had took 60 year,” Uribe said, not only reffering to the indurgence of the FARC, but the period of violence that broke out in the 1950’s during ‘La Violencia’.
Uribe, speaking at a local security council in Apartado, Antioquia, recognized the problems that arized with crime and violence after the demobilization of paramilitary organization AUC and the extradition of their bosses.
“Drug trafficking created a new outlet: the criminal groups, that hit Uraba, to a large extent Cordoba, to a very large extent Caucasia, Taraza, El Bagre, Zaragoza, Nechi. They must be defeated.”
The President, who always counted on the increased security as one of the main successes of his policies, is facing a soaring crime and murder rates in cities and departments where before there was relative peace.
