A United States aircraft landed at a military air base in Colombia on Thursday, with the intention that it will be used by the Colombian government to deliver aid to Haiti.
The arrival of the Boeing C-17 at the Military Air and Transport Command in Bogota signifies the first cooperation between the two countries’ military forces since an agreement was signed in late 2009 that allows the Americans to use Colombian military bases and airports for U.S. missions.
The Colombian and U.S. air forces will load the craft with more than 45 tons of aid to be taken to the earthquake-devastated country.
A further aircraft will arrive on Saturday carrying U.S. donated equipment to help combat forest fires in the central Colombian department of Cundinamarca. It will then also be used to deliver aid to Haiti.
