German Vargas Lleras, leader of coalition party Cambio Radical, Monday
met with the opposition politicians Cesar Gaviria (Liberals) and Luis
Eduardo Garzon (Polo) to discuss a broad opposition to the
re-election of President Alvaro Uribe.
According to senator Luis Carlos Galan — also present at the meeting — a number of politicians who are against the re-election of Uribe are seeking rapprochement to form an inter-party coalition against the 2010 re-election of the current President.
Galan said that former Medellín mayor Sergio Fajardo, Polo Democratico senator Gustavo Petro (both presidential candidate hopefuls) will also meet Gaviria to discuss their opposition to the re-election.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe can be re-elected for the second time in 2010 if the constitution is changed. His followers are currently in the process of doing so.
