A substance that induces abortion known as Misoprostol will be included in Colombia’s health plan, stipulated by The Regulatory Commission on Health (CRES).
The Health Ministry published the decision to permit Misoprostol on Thursday, however CRES has specified that the drug would only be available by prescription and only when abortion “is approved by law,” El Tiempo reported.
Abortion is currently only legal in Colombia in instances of rape, danger to the mother’s life, or in the case that the child will be born with severe defects. These three specific cases would be necessary in prescribing the medication.
The abortifacient Misoprostol induces the expulsion of uterine contents and is taken 24 to 72 hours after conception.
