Recaptured Colombian paramilitary leader Daniel Alejandro Serna, alias “Kener,” will be transferred to maximum security prison “Combita” on Wednesday, following his escape from house arrest in Medellin.
The police recaptured Kener on a farm outside of Medellin on Tuesday evening, after receiving a tip-off from an informant, El Espectador reported.
Colombian Defense Minister Gabriel Silva said that authorities will pay the $250,000 reward offered for information leading to Kener’s capture.
Silva added that it is imperative that security is tightened so that the paramilitary leader cannot escape again.
Kener, a former leader of the Medellin paramilitary organization known as the “Office of Envigado,” escaped from house arrest on Sunday, when men dressed as officials from Colombia’s prison authority came to his house, claiming they were there to transfer him to another facility.
Kener told police that he did not escape, but was kidnapped and fled from his captors, a version of events that authorities ruled out after sending 50 police officers to the farm where he was found, to follow up on the intelligence reports.
The paramilitary leader, who was originally captured in 2008, was reportedly placed under house arrest in his Medellin home because he suffered from intestine and kidney problems, as the result of a wound he received in his paramilitary days.
