Colombia’s Supreme Court publicly asked
President Alvaro Uribe Thursday to consider the objections to the
President’s candidates for Prosecutor General.
The country’s highest court should have elected a successor for Mario Iguaran, whose term ended last Friday, but so far has not been able to.
The candidates were criticized by NGOs for not having any experience with criminal law and one of the candidates is accused of having tried to bribe colleagues while he was a magistrate for the State Council.
The NGOs asked the courts to return the shortlist to the President, but the court claims not to have the competence to do so.
When the court Thursday still wasn’t able to elect a successor, court president Augusto Ibañez publicly asked Uribe to consider the objections and see if he voluntarily wants to give the court a new shortlist.
Colombia’s Supreme Court often clashes with the Presidency over a wide range of issues.
