Colombian President Alvaro Uribe Sunday asked Colombians forgiveness
for the violence that has victimized the population for the past 45
years.
Uribe, speaking before victims ofviolence in Popayán, said that he “with the responsibility of being President (…) want to (…) ask forgiveness to all Colombians.”
According to Uribe, his government is doing all it can “to recover peace through security with democratic values.”
The Colombian Head of State was present at the first granting of compensation to victims of violence committed by left wing guerrillas and right wing paramilitary groups. Victims of violence committed by state officials will only be repared if they can prove before a judge they have the right to be repared.
