The head of the Colombian Supreme Court, Jaime Arrubla, announced on Thursday that one of its judges has received a threatening email signed by prisoners of Combita, a jail in the department of Boyaca.
According to Arrubla, the threatening email was sent to a judge who focuses on criminal investigations, and said that the judges “will get a present in return for their work” fighting crime, reported El Tiempo.
General Oscar Naranjo, director of Colombia’s Police, said that they are currently investigating the threat. “People at [the prison] Combita are sending messages that we interpret to be intimidating … All of our research capacity is concentrated on determining the source and authors of the email.”
Following an analysis on the current security situation for the court, Arrubla requested that authorities provide them with more protection, because, as Arrubla concluded, “the entire court is vulnerable.”
The Supreme Court was put on high alert in early March, following the arrest of two alleged assassins close to the homes of one of the judges in Bogota, with one of the men reportedly carrying a pistol equipped with a silencer, in addition to the finding of a suspicious vehicle containing firearms near the home of another of the judges.
