The Colombian government and rebel groups FARC and ELN publicly tried to reach a negotiated end to the country’s armed conflict on several occasions.
The first attempt with the ELN was in 1982 and with the FARC in 1984.
The last talks with the FARC ended unsuccessfully in 2002. Talks with the ELN lasted until 2008.
While open peace talks were only held on a handful of occasions, the government and guerrilla groups have maintained regular secret contact over the past 30 years.
