Colombia’s third largest city Cali will not get an elite force to tackle
growing violence and crime, National Police chief Oscar Naranjo
said Friday.
Naranjo does not support the proposal of Valle governor to form a hybrid security force, consisting of both police and military personnel.
According to the National Police director, the army and Police are working closely together already and have successfully carried out joint operations.
“This is not new. We have been working closely and have integrated forces against criminals for a long time already,” Naranjo told Caracol Radio.
The Police commander added that the armed forces are working on ways to make the collaboration more effective.
Valle Governor Juan Carlos Abadía asked for the elite force, stating that violence in Cali is spiraling out of control and the murder rate this
year has gone up 23 percent compared to the same period last year.
