Independiente Medellin moved into second place in the Colombian Copa
Mustang II, while Atletico Junior took revenge for losing the most
recent final to Once Caldas, now beating the defending champions 4-2.
Medellin had been doing well in recent games and added another good performance against Boyaca Chico at Atanasio Girardot stadium. Just one goal was needed for DIM to take the victory, with Jackson Martinez netting on 14 minutes. The only highlight in a negative sense, for the home side, was a red card to Samuel Vanegas near full time.
Santa Fe jumped to third place thanks to a hard-fought victory at Envigado. Amu Arrechea’s early goal was later cancelled out by Envigado’s Carlos Alvarez. Omar Perez then put Santa Fe ahead a second time in the 34th minute and Alejandro Bernal made it 1-3 on the hour. The final goal was scored by Alvarez in the 62nd minute, 2-3. Losing no less than three players (Roberto Mosquera, Carlos Alvarez and Juan Leal) to red cards, didn’t help Envigado’s cause either.
Junior are in place four after a 4-2 win over champions Once Caldas. Teofilo scored three of the four home goals, and the remaining came from Carlos Bacca. Johan Fano netted both goals for the away side. John Valencia of Once Caldas and match hero Gutierrez of Junior were sent off in the final phase of the game.
‘Los Pijaos’, Deportes Tolima drew 1-1 with Cucuta Deportivo. The latter had taken a 0-1 lead through Lin Henry in the 58th minute but Jorge Perlaza drew level in the 73rd.
The match between Deportivo Pereira and Real Cartagena ended undecided as well. The visitors opened the scored through Nestor Salazar just before the half time whistle but Mario Gimenez made it 1-1 with just over ten minutes left at Hernan Ramirez Villegas stadium.
America remain without a single win after four match rounds, having been held to a disappointing 1-1 draw by Pasto. A penalty allowed Leider Preciado to put the hosts ahead on 24 minutes but German Centurion equalised five minutes before the interval. America are one of two teams without a win, the other being last-placed Envigado.
Although it is early to assess the chances of each team in this Copa Mustang II season, the current standings would have Huila, Medellin, Nacional, Santa Fe, La Equidad, Junior, Cucuta and Cali advance to the group stage.
