Colombia is seeking the return of U.S. Peace Corps volunteers, the country’s ambassador to Washington said on Friday.
The Peace Corps, a government program which sends volunteers to developing countries, has participants in more than 70 countries worldwide, but has not been active in Colombia since 1981.
According to Ambassador Carolina Barco, the government want the program to return to Colombia this year and perform volunteer work related to healthcare and the construction of schools.
Barco and President Alvaro Uribe are meeting with U.S. Congressmen in the coastal city of Cartagena on Saturday, and will include the return of the Peace Corps in the agenda.
