Colombian presidential candidate Juan Manuel Santos said Thursday that his proposed “government of national unity” is a “golden opportunity that we should take advantage of” and encouraged Colombians to vote for him in the upcoming elections on June 20.
“What other countries have done throughout history is come together to strive for ambitious goals that they eventually achieve. This is a rich country; with temperance, courage and unity, we can accomplish a lot,” the Partido de la U candidate said. Santos cited Chile, Spain and Ireland as examples of countries that arrived at agreements in order achieve their goals.
“We Colombians can also do it, we have great human capital, we are a valiant race and we should be proud. Thanks to President Uribe who paved the way for us with security, we are going to be able to build a government of national unity,” Santos said.
“I want to ask you with total humility and conviction to go out and vote to support this. All of the things we want, we will achieve, if this Great Agreement of National Unity materializes, with your participation,” Santos concluded.
Santos will face Green Party presidential candidate Antanas Mockus in a second round election run-off on June 20.
Colombian political party Cambio Radical officially announced Tuesday that they will support Santos’ candidacy, but did not commit to a forming part of his “government of national unity,” if he is elected.
