Colombian police announced Wednesday they had seized a 3.2-ton shipment
of cocaine in the Caribbean port of Cartagena during an operation
conducted with the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA).
The shipment was uncovered in a warehouse at the northern port and
was ready to be shipped out to Mexico and the United States, police
chief Luis Ramirez told reporters.
The drugs, worth some $98 million, according to police, had belonged to highly wanted Colombian drug trafficker Daniel ‘El Loco’ Barrera.
Colombia produces some 600 tons of cocaine annually, or more than 60
percent of world’s total production, according to the United Nations.
