Colombia has made significant progress towards complying with the conditions
for a free trade pact with the Unites States, U.S. Secretary of State
Hillary Clinton said Wednesday.
Clinton, speaking before a committee of the House of Representatives, said Colombian President Álvaro Uribe has made some important progress. However she thinks “there is still more work to do” to open up talks on the FTA at the moment.
The free trade pact, signed by both governments two years ago, has been halted in Congress by the Democratic majority. The Democrats and the new U.S. President Barack Obama demand Colombia improves labor rights laws and fights impunity for those that threaten or kill labor rights activists before they will ratify the agreement.
