The ministry of defense announced on Saturday a strategic plan to reinforce security for Colombian citizens, including an increased police presence and stronger counterintelligence.
Minister of Defense Juan Carlos Pinzon emphasized that military and police commanders will be assessed not only by their success in combating criminals and guerrillas, but also by the degree of security and peace enjoyed by citizens in their jurisdiction.
“It must be said to the Colombian people that we have strong armed forces, with increasing capabilities to protect their interests, from terrorists and common criminals alike. Security today is a priority and we continue to reinforce it,” Pinzon said after meeting with 136 generals and admirals this weekend.
“We are going to increase the police presence more than what we have been doing. We will prosecute heads of gangs that are causing distress in these cities,” Pinzon added.
The minister also announced his intention to attack 20 “pots” of micro-drug-trafficking in an equal number of cities over the next two months.
“The operations ‘Sword of Honor’ [of the army] and ‘Green Heart’ [of the police] have yielded great results,” Pinzon said. “They have affected the financial and armed structures of terrorist networks, criminal gangs, and organized crime. This is shown by the statistics.”
