Demobilized paramilitary warlord Guillermo Pérez Alzate admitted being
responsible for the murder of 39 people and the recruitment of more
than 60 minors.
Pérez Alzate, testifying for a Colombian Court from his U.S. prison, admitted having ordered the murder of a regional Avianca director, a journalist and a student the AUC suspected of supporting the FARC. He also said to be responsible for the massacre of six in a farmhouse just outside Tumaco, Nariño.
The member of the AUC’s Central Bolivar Bloc said his organization recruited more than 60 minors in the time he was with the paramilitaries. Several of these minors were younger than 15.
Pérez Alzate is one of the 14 paramilitary heads who were extradited to the U.S. in May 2008 to face drug charges. Some of these warlords agreed to continue collaboration with Colombian Justice to give clarity about the crimes committed in their home country.
