Venezuelan soldiers killed a Colombian citizen on the border between the two countries, the Governor and Ombudsman of the Arauca department say.
Versions of how the Colombian was killed differ. According to several media, the victim was searched by members of the Venezuelan army after he had crossed the Arauca by canoe but was shot when he and a friend tried returning to Colombian territory.
“The soldiers shot when they saw the men were ignoring the order to return to the Venezuelan shore. They fired indiscriminately at the canoe, injuring one of the young men. The other, after realizing the situation, returned to Venezuelan territory with the injured person,” Arauca Governor Luis Eduardo Ataya told the television station.
The department’s Ombudsman told Caracol Radio that a Foreign Ministry official will come to the border region to investigate the incident.
