Mercuria, one of the world’s largest private energy traders, said on Wednesday it had opened a trading office in Bogota and purchased a Colombian river barge business.
The energy trader did not reveal the name of the company, but did say it was purchased from Colombian cement giant Argos. The barges will be used to transport coal and other commodities along the river Magdalena to leverage across its trading business, Mercuria said in a press release.
“This is a very important entry point for us into the Colombian market,” said Juan Houlin, head of Mercuria Coal. “We are very optimistic about the future of Colombia and see it as an important country for our company now and especially in the coming years across all our commodity products.”
