Captain Edwin Mariño Caballero was assassinated on Wednesday near his home in Colombia’s third largest city Cali, after leading the operation that brought down alias “El Anticristo”.
Mariño, who was the police chief in the Alfonso Lopez barrio of Cali, was reportedly killed while in his car by two unknown gunmen on a motorcycle while on holiday leave.
El Anticristo, who is suspected of being involved in several terrorist attacks in Cali, including an attempt on Police General Fabio Castañeda and at least 20 homicides was killed on January 12, 2013 in a police operation headed by Mariño.
Colombian Defense Minister Juan Carlos Pinzon expressed his dismay over the murder of Mariño.
“[It is] very unfortunate. They [the authorities] tell me that the officer was on vacation [leave] and in a car with his wife [when he was shot]; according to preliminary investigations the motives have not been made clear,” stated Pinzon who has ordered an investigation into the murder.
