The Colombian Government will not participate in the debate about the
possible re-election of President Uribe. Congress will debate a popular
referendum demanding the possibility to re-elect the popular President
next Tuesday.
Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio told newspaper El Espectador Thursday “the Government will not propose any kind of concept and will not take sides.”
Members of the Uribista coalition want the popular president re-elected in 2010, somethingthat’s not allowed by the constitution. To force a constitutional change, allowing Uribe to run for the presidency for the third time, they called a popular referendum and gathered over four million signatures demanding the possibility.
