An alleged leader of one of the FARC guerrilla group’s urban militia was captured in Medellin on Friday, reported newspaper El Colombiano.
The guerrilla leader, alias “Marcos” or “Osama,” is accused of being a top leader of the rebels’ urban network in the departments of Antioquia, Caldas and Risaralda for the past 30 years.
“At the end of the 90s he was the terror of the departments of Antioquia and Caldas,” commander of the Aburra metropolitan police Yesid Vasquez told the newspaper.
He was captured during a raid in Robledo, a neighborhood west of Medellin, along with his wife, alias “Johanna.” The two were found with $25,000 in cash.
“It seems – and this is information yet to be confirmed – that he had escaped from the FARC with money from extortion and kidnapping,” according to Vasquez.
“Marcos,” 50, joined the FARC at the age of 20 and is wanted for crimes of terrorism, aggravated homicide and rebellion.
