Colombia’s Senate have decided to revive the Minor Offenses Act, with the intention of making it possible for the citizenry to proceed with speedy legal action regarding minor offenses.
The legislation creates an adequate procedure by which to pursue claims against crimes such as theft, fraud, and other misdemeanours.
The Constitutional Court overthrew the law in 2008, during the presidency of Alvaro Uribe, due to a belief that it violated the constitution by giving power to authorities other than the Prosecutor General to investigate minor cases.
With the revival of the law, the process of investigating minor offenses will be made more expedient by allowing other authorities to investigate minor claims.
