Colombia’s intelligence and immigration agency DAS announced on Tuesday it had arrested and expelled two Venezuelan intelligence officials on spying charges.
According to DAS director Felipe Muñoz, the two had entered Colombia illegally and were working on activities that were affecting national security. The DAS then “took the decision to expel them,” Muñoz said.
“There is no person, of no judicial or police authority of no foreign country allowed to do intelligence work in Colombia,” the DAS director stressed.
Moreover, the two Venzuelans were “clearly violating the migratory regime” for not registering their entry into the country, Muñoz said.
The incident follows back-and-forth accusations involving each country’s threat to the national security of the other. Venezuela last year arrested at least two DAS officials who also were accused of spying.
