Colombian civil aviation authorities and U.S. budget carrier Spirit Airlines Monday reached an agreement over the opening of a flight route between the North American city of Fort Lauderdale and Colombia’s Atlantic coastal city of Barranquilla, reports El Heraldo.
A representative for Spirit Latin America, Manuel Jaquez, said that flight sales between the two cities would be opened up as soon as the airline received written confirmation from Colombian authorities.
According to El Heraldo, the first Spirit flight Fort Lauderdale-Barranquilla flight will take off within the next two months, by July 29.
Interest in opening the flight route between Fort Lauderdale and Barranquilla’s Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport, is due to the fact that reportedly 80% of travelers who visit Cartagena, arrive in the Carribean city from Barranquilla.
The El Heraldo article makes no mention of the condition that Colombian civil aviation previously placed upon Spirit, requiring that the budget carrier open a promised flight route between Fort Lauderdale and Colombian Carribean island of San Andres, in order to gain permission to open the Barranquilla route.
Spirit announced last December that they planned to launch the new, direct flight path between Fort Lauderdale and San Andres this June.
