The European Council has invited Colombia to join the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime, the country’s Foreign Ministry announced on Sunday.
The invitation had been requested by Colombia in 2011.
“As a result of the analysis of regulation on cybercrime in Colombia, the Minister’s Council of the Council of Europe gave its approval to invite Colombia to adhere to the Convention on Cybercrime,” the ministry said in a press release.
The Budapest Convention is an international treaty aimed at synchronizing member states’ legislation and police effort to combat copyright infringement, child pornography, hate crimes and cyber-terrorism.
Apart from the European Union members states, the initiative counts on the support of the US and Canada.
