The Colombian counter-terrorism unit is working with the police’s computer crimes unit to find those reponsible for the Facebook group that issued death threats to presidential candidate Antanas Mockus.
The Colombian judicial police (DIJIN) contacted international agencies Thursday, including the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights for assistance in the investigation.
Director of DIJIN, General Luis Gilberto Ramirez, said that the agency’s computer crimes unit had the means to police international internet crime.
The first step will be to track down the IP address of the computer responsible.
DIJIN has arrested 36 people in relation to computer crimes so far this year, while 135 people were caught in 2009.
The Facebook group, which has now been removed from the site, was entitled, “I promise to kill Antanas Mockus before the 30th of May.”
President Uribe, whose son Jerome has also received threats via Facebook, condemned the words posted on the social networking site.
“For God’s sake! If it is true they should go to jail. All candidates, all political leaders, no matter their beliefs, have protection from this government,” Uribe said of the group.
