An Ecuadorean court on Wednesday withdrew extradition requests for Colombian Armed Forces commander Freddy Padilla and the country’s former Defense Minister.
According to a judge who ruled on the appeal against the extradition requests, the judge who had called for the extraditions had done so in a rush.
The court will continue to investigate Santos and Padilla, together with National Police commissioner Oscar Naranjo and former Army commander Mario Montoya for the March 2008 attack on a FARC camp on Ecuador’s side of the two countries’ border.
The attack led to the rupture of ties between Ecuador and Colombia. The governments of the two countries are currently trying to re-establish economic and diplomatic ties.
