Coffee farmers offer a new way of spending a holiday in Colombia. Instead of staying in hotels and hostels as a normal tourist, you can now experience the authentic daily life of a farmer’s family in San Jose de Alban, Nariño department.
The AgroTourism project offers travelers to spend two to six days living with a family in the community, visiting farms and learning about the traditional farming methods, from planting to harvesting. You can even participate in the work if you like.
“This is not a another hostel stay”, head of the project’s idea, Louis Deering, says. It is rather an immersion into real Colombian agrarian life.
The costs amount to 60,000 pesos, U.S.$30, per day and include a private room, three home cooked meals, a tour guide and transportation to and from day trips.
A part of the money goes to the AAA, the local coffee farmer’s association. The AAA helps the community with giving micro credits, repairing homes, supporting organic composting and waste water purification.
