Prosecutor General Alejandro Ordoñez told the Constitutional Court that
bull and cock fights are constitutional and, as an integral part of
Colombian culture, they constitute
“tolerable cruelty” towards animals.
These comments were in reference to a lawsuit presented by plaintiff, Oscar
Andrés Acosta Ramos, who claims that an article of the National Statute of Animal Protection is unconstitutional, El Tiempo reported Wednesday.
The Prosecutor General argued that bull and cock fights “are a part of the process of the creation of national identity,” have been represented in the writings of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the art of Botero and thus are forms of Colombian cultural and artistic expression.
Ordoñez stated that the lawsuit was invalid and asked the court to dismiss it.
