The Colombian government and electoral authorities asked the
Organization of American States (OAS) to examine electoral processes for the
2010 Presidential election a year in advance.
The OAS usually oversees electoral processes three months prior to an election. Colombian authorities requested that teh process begin a year in advance in order to avoid the interference of illegal armed groups.
Minister for Justice and the Interior Fabio Valencia Cossio said that electoral risk maps will be created, as well as a
committee to monitor the parties and candidates.
When
asked about a possible paramilitary interference in the upcoming
elections, Valencia Cossio said “so far there is no specific
abnormality,” but added that the electoral
risk maps will clarify any uncertainties.
