A Colombian court says soldiers were responsible for the 1991 shooting
death of a journalist and is ordering the government to pay damages to
his family.
Henry Rojas was a correspondent for the Bogota newspaper El Tiempo.
He was killed in the northeastern city of Arauca after reporting on
alleged corruption in the mayor’s office and the military.
The 27-judge Council of State has ordered the government to indemnify his family in the amount of $380,000.
The judges made their ruling Feb. 26, but it wasn’t publicized until Wednesday.
Colombia
has seen a drop recently in the number of reporters murdered, but the
New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists says self-censorship
has made them less of a target. (AP)
