The extortion of mining firms is a lucrative business for rebel group FARC, according to a document obtained by Caracol radio.
The “exclusive document” refers to an email sent by former FARC boss, alias Pastor Alape, to the now deceased Alfonso Cano and Iván Márquez on 14, October, 2011.
The email, presented live on radio 6AM Wednesday, gives details regarding how much mining firms were obliged to pay FARC and also implicates the ELN in the extortion business.
“The land owner pays guerrillas 25% of what they receive in tax for the land.”
“All miners contribute $2.75 a month. The mule drivers that transport fuel to the excavators pay $2.75 per mule every month.”
Por la producción el 5%. El impuesto que cancelan las retro excavadoras a los propietarios de la tierra es del 15% de la producción bruta. El dueño de la tierra cancela a la guerrilla el 25% de lo que recibe por impuesto de la tierra…”.
reportedly indicates that rebel group FARC make huge profits from the mining industry by extorting companies.
