Colombian born Edwing D’Angelo has emerged in New York as a fashion entrepreneur and designer to the stars.
Edwing D’Angelo was born and raised in the coastal city of Buenaventura, Colombia until his family emigrated to the Big Apple when he was 13 years old. As a kid, his affinity for fashion grew while watching his aunt make dresses. He attended tailoring workshops and mastered the trade of sewing, an activity mainly dominated by females in Colombia.
After emigrating to the United States, Edwing began high school in New York and upon graduation, received pressure from his parents to enter law school. Wanting to please his family, he went to college and pursued law. Instead of diving into his law textbooks he spent his time listening to lectures on fashion, art and took fashion–related classes.
His big break came when he secretly designed his sister’s prom dress. His amazing talent was considered feminine within the Latin culture, so again, he didn’t want his parents catching on. Unbeknownst to him, the prom dress became a sensation amongst his sisters classmates and he received requests to create 32 more dresses.
After this success, he knew that fashion completed his life, so he decided to bite the bullet and quit law school and find a job in fashion. Without experience or funds, the task proved daunting. For two years, he saved money and was finally able to open his own shop in Harlem, New York. His boutique is located in the Limelight Marketplace where he is well known in the surrounding fashion community.
His goal is to offer high-fashion products at reasonable prices. His style is drawn from old beauty but a modern twist on silhouettes, colors and styles with his color palate obviously inspired by Latin culture.
His work has been highlighted on national television stations, in national newspapers as well as major Spanish publications, featured as guest fashion commentator for Spanish networks and he even had his work displayed in the Hollywood hit movie “The Devil Wears Prada.” His styles are worn by many stars including Zoe Saldana, Sofia Vergara and Marc Consuelos. His work is also attracting today’s hippest celebrities and personalities including Lil Kim, Patti Labelle, Sean Paul and Mo’Nique.
