The Canadian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday said it was “helping” Colombian authorities search for the Canadian citizen who was kidnapped by left-wing guerrillas in late January.
Canada’s foreign ministry told Caracol Radio that it was “working closely” with Colombian anti-kidnapping police to facilitate the release of the Jernoc Wobert, who was employed by the Candian mining company, Geo Explorer. Interestingly, the Canadian officials did not use the word “kidnapping.”
Wobert was kidnapped by members of Colombia’s second largest insurgent group, the ELN, the northern Bolivar department on January 18 along with five other Geo Explorer employees.
Five of the six were released on February 15. Authorities claimed that military pressure against the ELN in the region had forced the rebels to release the aforementioned captives. Nevertheless, the ELN said it was to going to keep Wobert in captivity.
