An attack attributed to left-wing guerrillas has left one policeman dead and six wounded in northern Colombia, reported local media on Friday.
According to police, rebels attacked a police checkpoint with “unconventional” weapons and machine guns along the border of the northern Arauca, Norte de Santander and Boyaca departments, reported radio station RCN.
The victims of the attack were guarding electricity towers serving nearby municipalities.
The wounded policemen were taken to a local hospital in the Arauca department, wrote newspaper El Tiempo.
Police did not specify which group carried out the attack, but the presence of guerrilla groups FARC and the ELN as well as drug gangs “Los Rastrojos” and “Los Urabeños” are known.
Suspected rebels on Tuesday attacked the Caño-Limon-Coñvenas oil pipeline in the same area.
In December, the country’s largest rebel group, FARC, called a month-long unilateral ceasefire which is set to end January 20. On numerous occasions they have been accused of breaking the ceasefire. Colombia’s second largest guerrilla group, ELN, did not make a similar promise.
