Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa says the relations between Colombia and Ecuador are at “one of the best moments in history” thanks to the foreign policy efforts of Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos.
Correa, who took office in 2006, had strained relations with Colombian ex-president Alvaro Uribe. Diplomatic relations between the two countries completely broke down in March 2008 after a Colombian Air Force raid killed FARC leader “Raul Reyes” on Ecuadorean territory.
When Santos took office in 2010 he made it a top priority to mend relations between the two countries. Correa said Santos “changed things” and introduced “much more seriousness, more transparency and much more good and direct intention” in Colombia’s foreign relations.
Correa said a bi-lateral meeting would be held between the two countries in Ecuador’s capital, Quito, in October 2012, which would “serve to improve and deepen the sisterhood which exists between the two [countries].”
