Colombia’s Attorney General asked the country’s Prosecutor General to
indict a Colombian army colonel, a major and six soldiers for the
massacre of eight members of a peace community in 2005.
The six members of the military have been in jail awaiting trial for four months already after preliminary investigations provided enough evidence for the Prosecution to think the six were involved in the massacre of eight civilians, including three children, in San Jose de Apartado, an Antioquia peace community in 2005.
A group of 83 paramilitaries and the six members of the military are suspected to having been part of the 21 and 22 February massacre.
The cruelty of the massacre of members of the self declared peace community — a one-year-old and a five-year old were beheaded — led to shocked reactions.
The army initially blamed the FARC for the massacre, but its members became suspects after the demobilization of the AUC and the declarations made before the Prosecutor general’s office about the involvement of army members.
So far, the Prosecution had the army members arrested and designated as official suspects, but has neglected to indict.
