Colombian businessmen are confident that commercial relations with the
United States will remain the same now that Barack Obama has been
elected President of Colombia’s north American ally. The Colombian Government congratulated the newly elected U.S. President.
“The Government and the people of Colombia congratulate the elected president of the United States, sir Barack Obama and congratulate the American people,” a communique of Colombia’s Foreign Ministry read.
“Colombia reiterates its willingness to continue working on issues of common interest, the consolidation of a diversified agenda and the strengthening of ties between the two countries,” the Ministry added.
Meanwhile, Colombian business leaders show confidence the new U.S. President will continue the friendly economic ties between the countries.
President of trade association Analdex Javier Diaz told Caracol Radio Wednesday there is no reason to worry for deterioration of the trade relationship and thinks the pending North American Free Trade Agreement will continue to be a priority for both the U.S. and the Colombian government.
Rafael Mejía, chairman of agricultural association SAC told the radio station the election of Obama may even cause a swifter approval of the trade pact. Because of the blocking of the trade agreement by the Democratic majority in the U.S. House of Representatives, a Democratic President will be able to pass the law easier than a Republican.
