Judges of the Colombia’s Supreme Court attacked the government proposed
judicial reform before Congress and asked the lawmakers to “respect the
independence of powers”.
Congress — currently debating the reforms proposed by the Uribe administration — had invited the judges to talk about their opinion of the reforms.
The government wants the judicial branch reformed after a series of clashed between the judicial and the executive branch. The Supreme Court has opened investigations into more than 60 congressmen for their alleged ties to right wing paramilitary groups and is investigating the Uribe administration for the bribery of former congresswomen Yidis Medina.
Uribe has accused the Court of nepotism and partiality and seeks to take trials against politicians away from the Supreme Court through the reform. The existing cases of ‘parapolitics’ remain in the Court’s hands.
