Low-cost U.S. airline JetBlue has expressed an interest in offering routes to Colombian destinations outside of Bogota, such as the central-west department of Quindio.
In a meeting with Quindio’s governor Julio Cesar Lopez, directors from the airline said they would not rule out the possibility of operations between Orlando and the department’s capital Armenia, due to the high volume of interest registered by customers.
The Fort Lauderdale-Armenia service offered by Spirit Airlines has become one of the company’s most profitable routes and has helped boost interest in the department from several international airlines.
Spirit currently operates two flights a week with around 140 passengers per route from Florida.
JetBlue already offers eight routes to Latin America and in the next twelve months hopes to expand further by adding nine new aircraft to its fleet, to be specifically allocated to Colombian routes.
Mateo Lleras, the company’s Corporate Communications Manager said the meeting was the first of several to strengthen the likelihood of establishing a route between Florida and Quindio.
