A group of Liberal congressmen announced Monday they want former
Colombian president César Gaviria to be their party’s candidate in the
2010 presidential elections.
Liberal Senator Heli Rojas told Caracol Radio that because current President Uribe already is campaigning to seek another term, Liberalism should not commit suicide and put forth a strong candidate to compete with the current Head of State.
According to Rojas, Gaviria is the man for that job.
Gaviria was President of Colombia from 1990 til 1994 and Secretary General of the Organization of American States from 1994 until 2004. He is now chairman of the Liberal Party.
