Indigenous authorities Friday denounced the attempted assassination of an indigenous leader from the Yanacona community in the southern Colombian department of Cauca.
Former Yanacona governor and current advisor to the indigenous council, Alavro Munoz Anacona, was the victim of an attempted assassination by an unknown assailant on February 2, according to a Cauca Regional Indigenous Council (CRIC) press release.
The Interamerican Commission on Human Rights had previously requested that the Colombian government provide Munoz Anacona with state protection. This request was not fulfilled, CRIC said.
The Cauca indigenous community called upon the government to provide the necessary security to ensure Munoz Anacona’s safety.
