Ruben Dario Granda, the brother of fugitive FARC “foreign minister” Rodrigo Granda, sought asylum along with his wife and son at Nicaragua’s Embassy in Bogota on Monday.
Ruben Dario Granda and his family remain in the diplomatic headquarters while they await a decision from Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega’s government.
Colombian President Alvaro Uribe agreed to a humanitarian exchange of Rodrigo Granda – at French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s request – to aid in the liberation of French-Colombian Ingrid Betancourt in 2007.
In April, Ruben Dario Granda was arrested by police on charges of financing guerrilla group the FARC, but was released after a judge ruled there was insufficient evidence to link him to guerrilla activities.
