Nestled on the northern Providencia Island of the San Andres archipelago, off the coast of Nicaragua, the natural wonders of the area are reason enough to come and visit. This is truly the Caribbean of yesteryear in that much of the island has remained unchanged for over half a century.
Deep Blue offers all sorts of different treks and excursions for thrill-seekers and nature appreciators alike.
Guests can enjoy the spectacular scenery of McBean Lagoon National Park by land or by sea, by choosing to hike or kayak around the park’s blue lagoons, coral reefs, small cays, mangroves and tropical dry forests. The best part is kayak use is free for guests!
Deep Blue is situated near some of the best scuba diving in the Caribbean. The barrier reef off the island of Providencia is the second largest in the Caribbean and is part of the Seaflower Biosphere Reserve. The hotel works with various scuba operators to ensure guests are matched with the right dive for their skill-level.
Perhaps the most talked about of Deep Blue’s excursions is the “Robinson Crusoe.” Guests enjoy the thrill of the catch by either sport fishing or spearfishing for their lunch. They are taken to a deserted beach where their catch is skillfully prepared on the barbecue.

After a long day of excursions guests can relax with the luxuries that the comfortable, 13-room hotel provides.
Luxury suites are equipped with personal, infinity edged whirlpools on the balconies so guests can relax and gaze at the sea they spent all day playing in.
The tapas restaurant at Deep Blue offers intriguing cuisine such as fresh fish stuffed with local octopus and local lobster wrapped in prosciutto with an apricot basil couscous. Delicious!
When it’s time for a little romance, have Chef Walter Arango of Bogota serve you his seafood-tasting menu on the pier, by candlelight, under the stars. If you are looking for a honeymoon or wedding proposal, the pier by candlelight is the place. “The staff enjoy the buzz of preparing the perfect evening for such events as well as keeping the secret,” said Deep Blue Hotel Director Chris Hardyment.
Deep Blue’s Social and Environmental Responsibility
Deep Blue’s mission is to positively impact the local culture, environment and economy of Providencia Island.
The new hotel, staffed almost entirely by locals from Providencia, is designed for minimal environmental impact. It conserves water and energy and educates the guests and local community on the importance of ecotourism. “Deep Blue also helps support local good causes including social, environmental and cultural conservation projects,” said the director.
“With the majority of the islands’ fishing grounds having just been awarded to Nicaragua following the outrageous, recent decision of the UN court in The Hague, we feel that the only sustainable future for Providencia is based on ecotourism. The luxury ecotourism we try to encourage can minimize environmental impacts, whilst maximizing positive benefits for the local community,” Hardyment explained.
Double rooms at Deep Blue start at around $250 per night per couple, including breakfast and taxes. Luxury Suites that have private, infinity edged whirlpools run at about $415 per night for two people.
