With a depth of almost 2,000 meters the Chicamocha Canyon in eastern Colombia reached a new height when the geographical attraction was preselected as one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. The Canyon will compete with 77 other natural wonders worldwide for a place in the top seven.
The canyon, which covers over 108,000 hectares, was formed 4.6 billion years ago. Since a cable car was installed over the canyon in January, 120,000 visitors have looked down on its beauty.

Internet users voted online to chose the top 77 wonders. Of these 77, a panel of experts headed by former UNESCO director Federico Mayor Zaragoza, will select 28 finalists.
The experts will choose the finalists based on: natural beauty, diversity, ecological importance, historical legacy and geographic location. the finlaists will be announced on July 21. Voters will then have until 2011 to choose the top seven.
