Colombia has offered to free hundreds of FARC rebels in exchange for Ms Betancourt and other hostages. However Bogotá is refusing to meet a rebel demand for a demilitarized zone.Caracol radio also reported that the Colombian government has difficulties in contacting FARC rebels because its troops killed the rebels’ main negotiator in a raid on a FARC base in Ecuador on 1 March.
