Outside the walls of tourist-laden Cartagena there is an island with white sand beaches, placid bays and lush vegatation. Though it would not be a surprise if Baru becomes inundated with resorts within the next 10 years, it is still relatively undeveloped. That doesn’t mean it lacks amenitities. For less than $200 a night (depending on the season) one can rent a property with multiple air conditioned bedrooms, a kitchen, ample outdoor space, and a dock complete with a small outboard motor boat.
Local crab fishermen periodically dock to offer various freshly caught crustaceans. A friendly property manager brings local fruits and groceries. A local “cocinera” can be contracted to cook tasty Caribbean meals for lunch and dinner.
Two pristine beaches are a boat ride away. One is small and isolated. The other is Playa Blanca — the gorgeous expanse visited by many travelers that stay in Cartagena. On both beaches, obsequious waiters bring drinks and shrimp cocktails at moderately high prices.
Scuba diving, snorkling, jet skis, speedboats, deep sea fishing, and island tours can all be arranged. Beach massages will be offered whether or not one displays interest.
