The bodies of three Americans and a Panamanian were found Sunday at the site where their plane crashed in northwestern Colombia.
The American-made twin-engine Dash8 aircraft went down Sunday in Acandi, a municipality bordering Panama, killing four of the six people on board. It had left the city of Balboa in Panama at 10:45 pm last Friday.
Acandi Mayor Gabriel José Olivares said: “We received communication from [nearby] farmers who told us they saw a huge explosion.”
The National Air and Navy Service of Panama (SENAN) confirmed that one of its personnel, Lieutenant Lloyd Nuñez, was amongst the four victims of the crash. It has also said that the plane was an American “maritime patrol aircraft” and was involved in a drug operation in the border area between Colombia and Panama
The Colombian army has also issued a statement saying that the flight was part on an anti-narcotics operation along the Colombia-Panama border and denied that terrorism was a factor in the accident.
The U.S. embassy in Colombia has not yet confirmed the identities of the Americans killed in the crash.
