Colombian President Alvaro Uribe has received tens of thousands of letters from people who are sad that Uribe is not allowed to run for a third term as president, press secretary Cesar Mauricio Velasquez said on Sunday.
Velasquez, on behalf of the government, thanked all those who had expressed their support for Uribe.
“To all people who have written, to all those people who have felt sad or powerless, a message of hope. As the president has already said: the country goes on and we continue to serve Colombia from whatever position, we continue full of hope and full engagement,” Velasquez said.
According to the press secretary, many people are curious to know what the president will do next. However, Velasquez pointed out that Uribe still has 150 days in office left. “If we work day and night that will be 300 days,” the press secretary calculated.
The e-mails and phone calls received by the presidency came from all over the world, the press secretary said.
Colombia’s Constitutional Court on Friday, following a lengthy and controversial process, sank a referendum demanding a constitutional change needed for Uribe to run for a third term.
